Streaks seem motivating. Here's why we don't use them.
The Streak Problem
Streaks create perverse incentives:
- Maintaining the streak becomes the goal (not wellness)
- Breaking a streak feels like losing everything
- Anxiety builds as streaks grow
- Skipping when you should rest becomes scary
Research Findings
Studies on habit apps show:
- Broken streaks lead to complete abandonment
- Streak anxiety can outweigh benefits
- External motivation (streaks) crowds out internal motivation
- After streak loss, many users never return
What Actually Builds Habits
Long-term habits come from:
- Intrinsic motivation (you want to do it)
- Identity (you see yourself as someone who does this)
- Flexibility (the habit bends but doesn't break)
- Positive associations (it feels good)
Streaks undermine all of these.
What We Track Instead
We show:
- How often you typically practice (patterns, not perfect runs)
- Variety of what you've tried
- Progress toward personal goals
- Positive trends over time
The Freedom of No Streaks
Without streaks, you can:
- Rest when you need to
- Miss days without punishment
- Return whenever you're ready
- Focus on actual wellness, not numbers
