Mind: Meditation & Mental Wellness

Your First Meditation

A beginner's guide to getting started

Never meditated before? No problem. Here's everything you need to know.

The Basics

Meditation isn't about emptying your mind or achieving some blissful state. It's simpler than that: you're practicing paying attention, on purpose, without judgment.

Your mind will wander. That's normal and expected. The practice is noticing when it wanders and gently bringing your attention back.

Getting Started

Find a comfortable spot: Sit in a chair, on a cushion, or lie down. There's no "correct" position—just be comfortable enough that you won't fidget, but not so comfortable you'll fall asleep (unless that's the goal).

Start small: Your first meditation should be 3-5 minutes. Seriously. Building a habit matters more than session length.

Use guidance: Guided meditations are perfect for beginners. The instructor tells you what to do, so you just follow along.

What to Expect

  • You'll probably feel restless at first
  • Your mind will wander constantly—that's the point
  • You might feel bored, and that's okay
  • Some sessions will feel great, others won't

All of this is normal. There's no such thing as a "bad" meditation.

Our Beginner Recommendations

Look for sessions tagged "Beginner" or try our First Steps collection. These assume no experience and walk you through everything.

Start with:

1. "Introduction to Meditation" (5 min)

2. "Basic Breath Awareness" (5 min)

3. "Body Scan for Beginners" (10 min)

One More Thing

Don't judge your meditation by how you feel during it. The benefits often show up later: better sleep, less reactivity, more patience. Give it a few weeks of regular practice before evaluating.
